How to Prep Furniture Before Painting:
Step 1) Inspect for mold and remove if necessary
Step 2) Get rid of any loose paint layers that are peeling or chipping
Step 3) Remove hardware if you don’t want it painted
Step 4) Clean your surface well with a gentle soap and water, then let it dry completely
Step 5) Use nail polish remover to check if the previous finish was oil-based. If the color comes off using nail polish, it’s water-based; if the color doesn’t come off onto a q-tip, it’s oil-based
Step 6) For shiny surfaces, give your piece a light sanding. For oil-based pieces, priming is the easiest and safest option as water-based paint will not be able to adhere to it
Step 7) Do a scratch test on a small area to test the adhesion

Upcycle & Restore Flea Market Finds with Minwax Wood Stain & Clear Protective Finishes

Flea markets and yard sales are the perfect starting point for your next DIY project. Refinishing an abandoned box or crate and upcycling it into a planter is a fun an easy way to add excitement to your front yard, back yard, or even inside. Bridget Edell and Bruce Johnson walk us through selection, preparation, staining and finishing, so you can jump into this project over the weekend.

One thing to keep in mind is that anything you find at a flea market or yard sale can be used in a different way than it was originally intended. Bridget gives an example of a soft drink crate that she purchased. Rather than using it as a crate to hold bottles, she drilled holes into the bottom and turned it into a planter.

Once you decide on a project, the first thing to do is to sand it down, removing any old finish that is loose or flaking. Next, get rid of the dust by wiping the wood down with a dry rag. If you want to save time and complete your project in one day, grab Minwax Polyshades to apply a rich stain color and a clear protective finish in a single step. It’s also great for applying over an existing polyurethane finish. If you’d like to display the project in your outdoor space, use Minwax’s Helmsman Spar Urethane to protect the wood surface from the outdoor elements and exposure to sunlight, water, and temperature changes. Use a natural bristle brush to apply the stain and clear finish. Let the surface dry according to label instructions then fill up the planter with soil, flowers, herbs, or anything you’d like.

How to make a Mirror Ucycled from a Cable Reel

Easy woodworking project you can make in about half a day. Youre going to need a router if you want to flush mount the mirror and the plywood covering it. Always hard finding nice projects to make with cable drums, this one used a piece of mirror that i got thrown in with the glow in the dark table glass!
